Biography
Joel Werkema is a vice president and public information officer in the Corporate Communications area at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Joel leads a wide variety of communications and public affairs initiatives for the Bank, serving constituencies including the media, members of the public, government officials and staff, business and civic leaders, and Bank employees. His team manages the Bank’s digital communications channels and tools, multimedia efforts, and digital analytics – and supports the Bank’s leadership in a variety of public initiatives, including speech development and executive communications.
Joel serves on the Bank’s Management Council, and previously supported the System’s Conference of Presidents as Secretary (2017-2018) and Assistant Secretary (2015-2016). Joel joined the Boston Fed in 1991, originally as an intern, and worked in a number of functions before taking on a communications role in 2004. He also worked for a year outside the Bank at the nonprofit Boston Cares, focusing on corporate community engagement and volunteerism.
Joel earned an M.B.A. at Boston University’s School of Management and a B.A. in economics and English at Gordon College, and earlier spent a year as an exchange student in Yorkshire, England. He is a volunteer member of the marketing and communications committee at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of New England.
