Innovation across Mobile Payments: Alternative Checkout Models, Chinese Wallets, Fintechs, and Mobile Network Operators
Mobile payments innovation is characterized by recent industry developments related to merchant activities, authentication, fintech and global wallet initiatives. The MPIW explored these aspects of payments innovation at the December 2018 meeting. The discussions focused on: mobile/digital payment adoption trends; the impact of alternative checkout models on mobile payments; the global expansion of Chinese mobile wallets into the U.S. ecosystem; fintech charter and alternative solutions; and mobile network operator developments for payment authentication. Key findings revealed how mobile technology is enhancing and securing the consumer checkout process, how customer data can be used to combat fraud and enhance the user experience, factors that drive innovation and the role of fintechs, and the need for standardization of mobile financial services in the U.S.
